Monkey Apples - great Christmas decorations

Why not have a different type of Christmas Decoration on your table this year - a natural one, from Africa??

These monkey apples are a spherical wonder from nature. A natural fruit from the monkey apple tree. They are collected by villagers in Zimbabwe giving them a much needed source of income, and are hand decorated by a team of men and women working at Worx of Africa in Nelspruit South Africa.

The monkey apples can be displayed in bowls, vases or plates to make a special and colourful arrangement. As well as giving you pleasure to look at hem , you know that you are making a difference to the "people of Africa".

At Kendrick Imports we only trade with ethical traders and will only buy from renewable resources which are fairly traded.

These monkey apples are available from Kendrick Imports in bags of 6 - or you can make up your own colour selections. Click here for a direct link to the monkey apples on our web site.

The All new Rogue RAF Pilot's Bag

The all new Canvas Rogue Pilots bag is now available in the UK from Kendrick Imports. It is a great bag with a huge capacity and fabulous story!

This canvas bag is the newest addition to the Rogue range of bags and is already a great favourite. It is a copy of an original pilot bag from the 1950's - and is amazingly brilliant! It is made from 510g heavy cotton canvas and has leather trim in a rich oxblood colour.

The Rogue RAF Pilot bag has heavy duty lockable brass zips which is great for travelling. It is stunning and well designed (as you would expect) with hooks and strips of canvas inside for securing clothes and to stop them moving around. It also has a section at the bottom for shoes and boots with a canvas cover to keep them separate from clothing. There is a canvas flap that goes over all of the bags contents right under the zip so no clothes can get caught in the zip area. Rogue Pilot bag has a lovely cotton label sewn in to tell the story of the pilot bag.... I will leave that for you to read as a surprise when you buy it! The Rogue Pilot bag has a huge capacity - the biggest of all Rogue bags, and is like the Tardis!! Bag has a a leather pouch on the side that you can put your name, address, destination etc inside. Bag measures L 70cm, H 33cm W 26cm Available in sand or olive or RAF blue colour canvas.

Fairly Traded African Table Decorations

Monkey Apples as a Table Decoration.

Are you bored of your usual table decorations and looking for something eye catching and very unusual but which is also fairly and ethically traded? Well it is really simple. Use Monkey Apples.

Monkey Apples are a natural and sustainable resource. They are spherical seed pods from the African Monkey Apple Tree. The pods are collected by villagers, giving them a source of income and are not cut for firewood as they are a valuable resource.

The seeds are dried, sanded and hand-decorated by “The people of Africa”. These folk are encouraged to use their own skills and flairs when decorating so no two are exactly the same!

The colour and design of the monkey apples can then be chosen to suit the décor of your home. The range of designs can be found here: http://www.kendrickimports.com/index.php/worx-of-africa/monkey-apples

Snakes at the Kendrickimports.com house

15th August started like any other day for Kendrick Imports in Hazyview. Emails, phone calls etc. The weather was a fantastic 31 degrees and the first hint of spring in the air. The birds aware of the change in weather begin to nest and the first few toads and insects about during the evening. The stage was all set for the first reptiles to begin enjoying the warmer days and to move around.

Pete, having been brought up on the Lowveld in Africa has handled snakes since being about ten, so this time of year always has a sense of anticipation for the him. On the farm we see a few snakes, but in our nine years they have never been troublesome to us at all.

Yesterday afternoon saw the first snake encounter of this spring. Em was working at the lodge next door to our farm, when a lady came across a snake in her room. Titus who works at the lodge was summoned and captured the snake in a bin liner!! The most common reaction of African people is to be afraid of snakes and to kill them, so this was one lucky escape for the snake. Pete’s phone rang and Em asked him to please come and get the snake and free it away from the lodge.

The snake was collected and bought to the farm. We did not know what type of snake would be in the bag, although we had been told that it had been spitting… the snake was released on to the floor so we could look at it properly. It was indeed a spitting cobra, only a small one, and all it wanted to do was escape.

The spitting cobra is a gun metal grey colour. It lives on mice, toads and frogs. It lays 10 -22 eggs in the South African summer (Nov – Jan). The defence mechanism of the snake when cornered is to spread a hood and spit readily. The spit stings the eyes and although does no permanent harm is a great defence.

The snake was popped in to a bucket (with a lid) freed in a pile of leaves on the far side of the farm. A happy, lucky snake!

Photos show the snake being identified, a close up of the snake and the snake being released.
